Oklahoma Water Survey Data Web Portal Demonstration

Friday, April 25, 2014 - 10:00am

Norman, Okla.—A powerful new tool is available from the Oklahoma Water Survey, located at the University of Oklahoma, for organizations in the state who collect and use water data.  Oklahoma Water Survey Director Robert Puls will demonstrate Phase I of a new water data web portal at 10 a.m. Friday, April 25 in The Core, located inside the Stephenson Research and Technology Center, on the OU Research Campus.

The Oklahoma Water Survey created the data web portal in response to the more than 20 different federal and state jurisdictions, agencies, tribes and organizations with some responsibility for water management in Oklahoma.  Each of these entities collects and makes information available.  Because of the magnitude of the information from so many organizations, it is difficult to find the relevant data, especially as it is collected for many different reasons and from different places.

The Oklahoma Water Survey has now completed Phase I of the data web portal, which for the first time assists users in obtaining data from multiple sources that apply to a particular place.  The water data web portal has a function that is similar to an online shopping cart.  Information retrieval is based on geographic and water boundary criteria (specific location, watershed, aquifer).  Information from multiple sources that pertain to that location can be selected, and the data can be submitted into the data cart for download.

As more data from more sources is added, including statistical and modeling tools, the portal will become an even more powerful tool to assist the user in understanding and using the data.  OU established the Oklahoma Water Survey as a trusted source of water information for Oklahomans and others.  For more information about the Oklahoma Water Survey, visit oklahomawatersurvey.org.

Potential users of the new water data web portal are invited to attend and participate in the demonstration.  A limited number of computers will be available for attendees who want to participate in the demonstration.  If you are interested in attending the demonstration, contact Robert Puls at bpuls@ou.edu Limited seating is available.
